Kentucky Candidates' Survey on Science Policy 2018
In September of 2018, KAS worked with our Advocacy & Education co-chair Trent Garrison and his Science Policy class at NKU to gather information from Kentucky candidates about their positions on scientific public policy issues.
Below is the letter that all state-level legislative candidates were sent.

September 2018
I’m writing you on behalf of the Kentucky Academy of Science (KAS). We are the largest membership-based scientific organization in the Commonwealth with nearly 5,000 members. Our mission is to “foster scientific discovery and understanding in Kentucky.”
It is important for folks around the state to know where our elected officials stand on issues related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Because of this, KAS is spearheading a state-wide study, and we want to hear your thoughts!
Please see the five questions below and provide a response by September 26. If you don’t have an answer for every issue, that’s fine. But we would like to get at least a few answers from everyone so our constituents know in which areas you are most passionate.
Answers will be compiled and made public on our website and made available at the annual meeting at Western Kentucky University on November 2&3. We strongly encourage you to participate. If you choose not to participate, it will be noted that you were not willing to provide STEM answers to KAS.
Below are the questions:
EDUCATION. In an age dominated by complex science and technology, how can we ensure that students receive adequate STEM educations?
FOOD & WATER. How would you manage Kentucky’s agriculture so it provides healthy and affordable food grown in an ethical and sustainable way? What should government do to ensure access to clean water?
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT: With nonrenewable resources on the decline in Kentucky, how do we create a sustainable Kentucky? What are your stances on: hydraulic fracturing, nuclear, and renewable energy sources? What are your views on climate change, and how would they affect your energy policies (if at all)?
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY: How do you balance economic stability with environmental health and conservation?
SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY. How will you foster a culture that respects scientific evidence and protects scientists? What role(s) specifically, if any, should government play in stimulating innovative science and technology so we continue to benefit from them?
