KAS Science Policy Update

Madison Flory

Our science policy team has had a busy summer!

Clair, our summer policy intern from the Integrated Biomedical Science program at UK, wrote a policy brief on PFAS. Here is a link to our page on PFAS, where you can read her brief and get more information on the growing environmental and health concerns surrounding these chemicals:  We plan to have more pages like this soon, addressing topics such as nuclear energy, geoengineering, and more! Email me at policy@kyscience.org if there’s a topic you’d like to help write or that you think we should focus on!

I was able to attend the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Forum in July. This year’s focus was on artificial intelligence, another hot topic in science policy. I attended sessions focusing on inclusive AI decision-making, building public trust in AI, and managing risks associated with AI. This forum will be very helpful when the Kentucky legislative season starts back up, as AI is sure to be a focus of legislation this year!

There has been lots of science policy in the news lately. Want to know more about the Supreme Court’s Chevron decision? How about getting some information on how the upcoming presidential election will shape science, and science policy for years to come? Interested in a discussion on the Risky Research Review Act recently introduced by Senator Rand Paul? Come to our next Science Policy Committee meeting, Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 12:30pm. We’ll be discussing these recent developments, planning upcoming programming related to the election, and more during our monthly zoom meeting. Email policy@kyscience.org to receive meeting reminders and the zoom link!

Calling all Kentucky Physics Teachers!

Are you a physics faculty in a Kentucky high school, two-year college, four-year college, or university?  If so, do you know about the Kentucky Association of Physics Teachers or KAPT?  We are a state section of the American Association of Physics Teachers.  KAPT holds two annual meetings, one in the spring and one in the fall (in conjunction with KAS).  These meetings are an opportunity to network, showcase research in physics or physics education and outreach, and participate in workshops.  These meetings are a great way to network and explore common interests in physics education.
