Research

Hello! my name is John Abrams and I work for Berea College in Madison County.  I have been working on training a machine learning model to identify individual Eastern Box Turtles based on shell patterns ( think facial recognition but for Turtle shells ) So far, I have a database of around 150 individuals,  I believe I am ready to test it out on a larger data set.

For the 2025 season I have set up a survey123 form to intake data which can be found here—- https://arcg.is/1Li9XS3
The main data I need is date, time, location and at least 1 photo but the more the better.  I am also collecting morphometric data that isn't required but if you have time would be greatly appreciated.  For that I use a cheap hanging scale that reads in grams and a simple caliper with a digital display.  Basically, just shell measurements at the highest, longest, widest points and a weight along with scute counts. I'm happy to walk anyone through the process if they want to contact me.

I'm working with a company that uses a similar software for sea turtle research and hopefully I can use my data get a new version up that will allow easy access to the general public without all the coding and programming needed to get it working on desktop.

Thanks everyone and feel free to share with anyone you think might be interested in helping.

What kind of data can you record about a turtle sighting? Here is the link for folks to fill out the form online without access to Survey123 https://arcg.is/0vOOGq0

Thanks for helping out
